For years, a common past times for Ontarians in the summer has been heading “up north” to what is lovingly referred to as Cottage Country. For a lot of families this tradition dates back for generations. Many of us can only hope to someday own a Northern oasis. But the process of obtaining one has become much more difficult in recent years.

Increasing gas and real estate prices are one factor, but availability is also an issue. These Northern escapes have become more and more scarce and real estate development in these areas is rare because developers are reluctant to encroach on existing properties. More and more people in the Toronto area are looking to their own backyards for the solution. It’s a term we’re starting to hear more as residents of this area; “Cottaging in the City”.

“Cottaging in the City” is a concept based on the idea that one can create a Northern-like oasis in their own backyard without having to worry about the cost of maintaining a summer residence or any of the other factors that come with a cottage. For a lump payment over one summer people can create their own escape. Popularity of landscaping over the last 5 years has increased exponentially in keeping with this trend. So the question becomes: How do you create your own Cottage in the City?

You need to start by asking yourself the following: If I could do anything with this space, what would it be? For some, they dream of a creating a lagoon including a pool, a natural water feature, etc. For others, it might be a small dining area with a large garden. There are also trends or items that you may not have thought to include. Things like pavilions, outdoor kitchens or fireplaces, cabanas, etc. can really take a project to the next level. With a trustworthy landscape contractor you can get everything you want out of your property, including some items that you may not have considered as possibilities for yourself. They can take those ideas and find the best way to execute them. Moving forward with a reputable company is a great way to ensure things turn out the way you want them. Many larger or more experienced companies may even provide design services.

A design is an important part of the preparation of your project for several reasons. Although a design won’t be able to give you every possible angle, it’s a great way to ensure that the aspects you want to incorporate in your yard are exactly where you want them. It’s a also important to have a design because it reducing the possibility that there will be extra or unaccounted for costs attached to your project.

The prospect of a large project like this can be daunting, but just try and remember to keep your end goal in mind. If you make sure to stay on point with everyone involved in the project you can easily obtain your “Cottage in the City”.
